Starting November 1, the year is jam-packed in our household. Of course, there is Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s but we also have church functions and family festivities, three office parties and FIVE birthdays squeezed into these two months. I love playing host and we enjoy having friends over to celebrate but I don’t want germs to stick around after our guests have gone home. With the fun floating in and out, I want to make sure that everyone is kept healthy.
Today, I am going to look at five ways to help protect and prepare for this year’s cough, cold and flu season – especially while hosting with our new baby.
1. Disinfect Between Guests
As bad as a cough or cold is for us as adults, there are few things scarier than watching your baby and children get sick. Luckily, all three of my boys (hubs included) were spared when I caught the two-day flu.
I tried my hardest to quarantine myself in my room as much as possible, but with a busy toddler and baby learning how to move it was difficult. I went around using Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes on all my hard, non-porous surfaces to kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria. A few places I spent some extra time was doorknobs, light switches, and countertops. We have three different sets of guests staying with us within two weeks. Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes help me quickly kill germs rather than spread them around and can wipe away 99.9% of the most common allergens. * I try to keep a container of wipes in each of my bathrooms and one in my kitchen for quick clean up.
2. If You Catch the Flu – Catch Your Zzzz’s
As a nurse, I know how serious a fever can become in both children and adults. I was hit with a 103-degree fever for 2 days and seriously had no idea how I was going to keep up this Mom gig.
It really should be a rule that Moms cannot get sick.
I knew how important rest would be. If you sleep better – you feel better and I loved using Breathe® Right Extra Clear Nasal Strips because they are easy to apply, drug-free and safe to use with my nursing baby. They helped provide relief from congestion, so I could make the most of my sleep between midnight feedings.
3. Keep Your Kisses to Yourself
You know that second cousin twice removed that just has to kiss all over you and your baby? Yup you guessed it – I am pretty sure this is my biggest pet peeve but as hard as it is to resist… please don’t kiss my baby! RSV is a respiratory virus that has babies fighting to breathe and usually gets them a trip to the ER for treatment. As parents, it is important to make our wishes known with friends and family. It helps keep everyone safe and happy and avoids awkward moments of stress and frustration.
Trust me, I know the self-discipline it takes to keep from smooching on those chubby baby cheeks. I get a few cold sores a year and every time I do, I have to stay far away from my families faces to prevent spreading this pesky virus. When I get the first tingly sign of a cold sore, I always turn to Abreva® Pump Cold Sore and Fever Blister Treatment. Abreva helps shorten healing time to 2 ½ days and is easy to apply.* Literally, I ALWAYS have this ready in my medicine cabinet.
4. Stock Up BEFORE
Speaking of having things ready; a great host always has everyone’s remedy on hand. When I know guests are coming, I stock up my fridge, freezer, pantry AND medicine cabinet. I like to shop at Fry’s, part of our local Kroger Family of Stores. With a list a mile long and tons of fun to be had don’t let the cold or flu get in your way! Theraflu Power Pods DaytimeSevere Cold work to temporarily reduce fever and symptoms of colds like headaches, aches and pains. I also grabbed a bottle of Robitussin® Maximum Strength Honey Cough & Chest Congestion DM to sooth on contact and provide cough relief. With no artificial colors, gluten-free and made with source certified honey, you can get the cough relief you need! There is also Robitussin for kids (ages 4 and up). Check your local Kroger Family Stores for availability!
Remember, Theraflu Power Pods Daytime Severe Cold and Robitussin® should not be used at the same time.
5. Don’t Stress
Did you know that increased stress levels weaken your immune system? By keeping up your daily activity and exercise routines you can cope through holiday stressors by deep breathing, positive words and fun festive music. This way we can all get to feeling more like ourselves quicker and back to celebrating the fun of the seasons with our loved ones!
