Just your friendly reminder that there are only 11 days until Mother’s Day! I know right? Where has this year gone?
As many of you know, my Mom has cancer and lives with full time care to help her stay comfortable. Unfortunately, due to many different circumstances, that home is also across the country from me.
Mother’s Day is hard when you’re long distance, want to hug your Mom and tell her how grateful you are for everything she sacrificed. I was lucky the past two weeks to have a sweet friend offer to help me talk to my Mom on the phone and this past Sunday we were even able to facetime and she could see Ryker. Those are special moments that I hold dear and screenshots of their little conversations I save and cherish.
While I was talking with my Mom, she expressed how she had been feeling down. I told her she better cheer up because Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I have a surprise for her!
I had been thinking up just what my Mom would like this year which gets tough since there are limited options but I started brainstorming her favorite things.
-My Mom is a chocoholic and loving passed that trait on to me as well so I have to throw in some fancy chocolates.
-She loves all things PINK! Hmm… I am starting to see a trend in similarities here 🙂
-Without fail my Mom always had the most beautiful and perfect Hallmark card to send for every occasion. I can fondly remember being a little girl going to Walmart to pick out a card for my aunt’s birthday or a special holiday like Easter. She would carefully read through several cards before finding the ideal words that matched just what she wanted to say. I loved that. Walmart is featuring their one-of-a-kind Hallmark Signature Cards for Mother’s Day, the perfect addition to her gift.
-Mom loves flowers. She was the master green thumb and unfortunately, that is one characteristic that just didn’t get passed down. What does she love more than all these things? Her grandson of course! So, I decided to make a paper flower bouquet with a handprint heart from little man. He loves getting involved in all my projects anyways, so it’s a perfect win win.
I made two different types of flowers for our paper love bouquet. Mums (you know for Mum’s Day) and Roses!
Paper Love Bouquet
Multicolored Construction Paper
Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
For the Mums:
Step 1: Fold your construction paper in half. Cut 1/4’’ stripes up towards the seam leaving 2” intact. You can use sheers or I used my paper cutter.
Step 2: Once the length of your paper is shredded, add hot glue to the top 2” of your wooden dowel. Begin to roll the paper around the dowel and around itself adding glue as your continue.
Step 3: Secure with a few extra drops of hot glue and let cool.
Step 4: Once the paper is secure, begin to fan out the stripes of paper to look like a blooming flower.
For the Roses:
Step 1: Start from the outer edge of your paper and begin cutting in a snake like pattern. Weave your cuts in and out to create a wave shape for the petals of your roses.
Step 2: Add hot glue to the top 1” of your dowel. Grab the outside edge of paper and begin to roll the paper around the dowel and then around itself. Add small drops of hot glue as you go to hold the shape in place.
Step 3: Don’t worry about what each section looks like; just keep rolling and the flower will begin to form its shape.
Step 4: Secure with a few extra drops of hot glue and let cool.
After I made the flowers, Ryker helped me and we traced his hand. PS this is really hard with a toddler and I had to call Dad for backup! I cut out his print and placed it on a heart that I glued to another wooden dowel.
I know many people say that we should celebrate Moms every day and not just this one time. I agree! But this is an important season and I don’t mind sending my Mom a little extra paper love to show her what she means to our family. Take advantage of this Ibotta offer as well here!
Don’t forget all the mothers in your life! I picked up a card for my step mom and my mother in law as well to show them that we love and appreciate all their hard work and support! I love being able to run into Walmart and grab the NEW Hallmark Signature cards. They are so personal and stand out to me because of their unique designs.
