As you may have read in our previous post, labor definitely did not go how I imagined. I won’t be sharing my full labor story (I did journal it for posterity) but I will share some of the highlights of my pregnancy & labor below. Also a lot of people have asked about his middle name. Yup it’s just B. It is in honor of both of his grandfather’s names (Butch & Brad) as well as his Dad’s middle name (Brett).
How I found out I was pregnant: Cam and I had been trying for quite a while and every month I took at least three pregnancy tests each time driving myself crazy because it was always negative. On day 29 of my cycle, I told Cam I would only take one pregnancy test this month and be done with it. I took it first thing in the morning (maybe I am crazy but I always put a piece of toilet paper over it so that I can’t see while my phone clicks away the 180 seconds) & I was sure it was negative but then two lines appeared and I got so excited! I immediately called my doctor who sent me for blood work the same day. I was put on lots of hormones and bed rest as much as possible. I was trying not to get too excited because this had happened before and I didn’t want to get my hopes up. It was all just a waiting game but I was excited for this little girl. Well at least I thought it was a girl! ***So I wrote this before our gender reveal and I was so convinced it was a girl; I laugh now thinking that I wrote this.
How I told Cam: I had to wait all day till Cam got home which was pretty agonizing. I made a little card that said, “You are my favorite person to make a person with,” and left it with the pregnancy test on our bed. Cam came home from school and asked me how my day was and went in our room to change. About 10 seconds later he came back holding the card and he was SO excited! We sat on the couch the rest of the night talking about Baby Smith and praying this time would work out for us.
Best part of the first trimester: Since we had so much trouble getting and staying pregnant we were able to go in for our first ultrasound at 6 weeks. We were able to see sweet baby and hear their heart beat for the first time. Then we heard the heart beat on the doppler at 12 weeks and I knew our baby was growing so strong! It was one of the most special moments and made it feel so much more real!
Worst part of the first trimester: Two things: 1). On my birthday I was just about 8 weeks and fighting morning sickness pretty bad. I was sick around the clock and had spent 10.5 hours at the hospital for my OB rotation. I was exhausted and sitting in the back of the car on the hour drive home with my carpool group. All of the sudden I knew I was going to be sick and they had to pull over on the interstate… during rush hour. I was so embarrassed and my friends just thought I was car sick so I went along with it because I wasn’t ready to tell anyone I was pregnant. 2). Since I was in OB for school I was learning everything that can possibly go wrong with mom and baby and then seeing it during clinical rotations. I talked to Cam about it all the time and he just keep reminding me that those are rare cases and I had an excellent doctor taking good care of me.
First trimester cravings: Ocean Spray Cran-Apple Juice, oatmeal, Taco Bell (anyone who knows me knows I hate fast food & I cried the first time I craved it during pregnancy), & LOTS of fruit
Best part of the second trimester: Getting my energy back, graduating nursing school, getting my bump!
Worst part of the second trimester: I got leg cramps 3 times total but you would have thought I was going to die each time! Seriously, I have never had a charlie horse or anything in my life but to wake up with that stabbing pain was not pleasant. I also had really bad left lower back pain. My left hip was higher than my right making it so uncomfortable to walk. Mainly both of these problems were after long days on my feet like at clinical or teaching ballet for too long.
Second trimester cravings: Ice cream, Grape Juice, Rice Krispy Treats
Best part of the third trimester: Finally looking pregnant, having my baby showers, nesting/organizing the nursery.
Worst part of the third trimester: Left hip pain still, taking the NCLEX, pre-term labor, feeling HUGE & the waiting game
Third trimester cravings: Moose tracks & French silk ice cream, pasta, & ice
