Let’s take 2 minutes & rewind into my past life, shall we?
I majored in dance at Brigham Young University where I performed with the International Folk Dance Ensemble and the Ballroom Dance Company. Cameron & I actually met on one of the Folk Dance teams which seemed so fitting seeing as dance is a huge part of my life and now he is too.
I loved ballet and did most of my education classes focused in the genre. Ballet was my life and pretty much the only world that I knew until college. At BYU I was introduced to the crazy world of ballroom where the makeup was bold and the hair was sleek. But the real magic started with the dress.
On team I met Sheri, who accelerated her talents in the ballroom industry by custom hand making extraordinary gowns. These are not just dresses. These are works of art.
After moving to Arizona, she entered the Little Black Dress Challenge for Phoenix Fashion Week and WON! This Summer, I had the pleasure of working with her and seeing her gorgeous inventory of gowns and I was in dress up heaven!
Dance gave me so much confidence growing up and it was the one place where I truly felt free. I am super nervous if I have to speak in public and in large groups I might not say much until I feel comfortable, but put me on a stage under those bright lights and I’m alive. For me it feels like coming up for air. I feel smart and sexy and elegant all at the same time.
When I teach couples for weddings, I often hear ‘oh, I can’t dance,’ but I always say everyone can dance and I truly believe that. You might not go professional or ever be seen on stage but dancing is how you interpret the music through your body. And you should dance everyday. Try it and see how much confidence dancing can bring to you.
